People will only be required to have taken the class that they will teach? I doubt most people could teach two grades below them. PLease explain your reasoning.

In response to Josh's comment. How are program works is that the high school graduates would be teaching the lower school grades. That is around 7-12 grades below them. So, no one would be teaching two grades below them. All teachers in our program are high school graduates, and would be teaching lower school grades.

Aren't some parts of your JJLuM plan dangerous to teachers entering to teach in war impoverished countries? How would their safety be ensured?

How would you fund your program to certify teachers to go to other countries? (I’m sorry if you answered this in your power point but I was out of the room with the baby for most of your presentation)

How do you think the government is going to get money to support your program when they have troubles of their own?

Lucy said...

In response to Max’s question. Our funding has multiple steps. First, every countries government that is part of our program donates a portion of money. This money is what we use for the flights and housing of these teachers, that are in other countries. The rest of the money needed will come from philanthropists and other private donors. State colleges will allow our high school graduate teacher participants to go to four years of college for free after completing our program. Also elementary kids have programs where children are sponsored by family and friends to jump rope or shoot hoops. Money that is raised will go to our program. Also some minor fundraisers like auctions and marathons in big cities internationally will also take place.

If you had the attitude you had during the presentation, how are you going to hold onto the positive support from other countries with that passive attitude to the countrys who dont want to support you

You said in your presentation that schools around the world which lack teachers should contact your agency. Since many of the countries that lack teachers are poor and don't have access to the media, how will they have heard of it?

If you are using high school graduates who can not afford college as volunteers, is there some sort of test to see if they are smart enough and have the capability to teach? Cleary they are interested if they volunteer, but what if they do not have the intelligence?

Anonymous said...

How long of a period of time will the volunteers work for?

Ryan-Cos said...

During you power point you said that you would station all of these people around the world to teach, but i was wondering where exactly do you expect them to be teaching, and will where they teach have anything to do with their life style?

During this project you called this hole program JJLuM. Does that stand for anything or was it just made up on the spot?

I thought that your idea for a commercial was interesting. Is this your only way to attract people to your program or would you use other strategies too?

Lucy said...

In response to Kit’s question. Yes, there is a requirement for the high school graduates. They have to have gone through all schooling divisions up to twelfth grade, and receive passing grades. We did not discuss as a group if they should go through a test, but I believe that a simple test to confirm their intelligence is what we would do. The volunteers can work for three different periods of time. Those times are one year, two years, or three years.

Ryan, JJLuM stands for Jessie, Joe, Lucy, and Matt (The "U" comes from Lucy).

What is your definition of education for all? You are having volunteers teach up to the 5th grade level, so I'm guessing that's your definition, but I just wanted to make sure.

John said...

Look, I'm being annoying, so here's another question which you don't have to answer. I'm interested in the curriculum your volunteers will teach children. Will it have more to do with reading and writing, survival in the field, sex education, religious education, racial education, or telling them what the world is like today?

MatthewL said...

Greta, that's a good question. I believe our plan is to have government’s support. We’re hoping that schools will be able to contact a government or government-based organization that can then contact us. Governments may also be able to gain teacher-qualification for us in other ways, sometimes as simply as a survey. In short however, our plan is to have country’s governments be responsible for contacting us if a school in their nation cannot.

MatthewL said...

Theron, we have several strategies for gaining governments funds. The first governments we will solicit funds from are wealthy governments (ex. U.S, UK, France, etc.). When we do request funds from more poor countries, we will request that they give us money from various sources. For example, if a country is poor due to warfare, we might ask that they can give us some of the budget for war, since educating a nation’s people could enable it to escape or exit a war. If a country truly cannot give us any money for our program, but wishes to better educate their people, then we will probably enable them to participate regardless of their lack of funds. A nation that is broke might not be able to educate its people, and we’d be happy to help!

I am responding to Sonny's question. In order for our program to run smoothly, we will ask permission of the country we are working in. It would be unrealistic if we went in to a country without permission. If a country does not want us there, there is nothing we can do to (without breaking the law) to teach there. Of course, that doesn't mean that we can't try to change their minds.

I am responding to Ava's question. Our program will attempt to keep our volunteers safe. As we said, we will try to provide comfortable living conditions for our volunteers, but they will also be as safe as possible. Even though your safety is not necessarily 100% guaranteed, you are doing something for the good of mankind. I would like to compare a JJLuM worker with a member of the Peace Core or United Nations. You do go into war stricken places, yes. But that is a sacrifice you have to take if you’re a member of our program. I'm glad you brought that up, because that is an important thing to consider when you are applying for our program.

I am going to respond to John's second question. John, a large part of Education For all is illiteracy, and obviously writing skills. Therefore, we will be teaching reading and writing skills in the lower grades. That will be our main focus, along with math, history and science. What we are trying to accomplish here is to educate students up to a level where they can speak, read and write fluently so they can eventually go out into the world and get a job. Basically, we are teaching them the same things we teach here in America.
