Escuela Internacional, Coyoacan, Mexico


I visited Escuela Internacional in Coyoacan, Mexico today and had a terrific time meeting with the students who will work the NAIS Challenge 20/20 project in the Fall of 2006.
The students in the picture are in the 8th grade and participated last year on the project. They expressed an interest in continuing with the project. In the Fall, I will have two sections of 8th grade students and Escuela Internacional will have one section (about 20 students) of these 9th graders working together. We have selected Education for All as our global issue.
All of the students at Escuela Internacional have been invited to join our blog spot where we will host various discussions on our project.
My arrival in Mexico City
On June 26, I arrived in Mexico City for the beginning of my 15 day visit. I was picked up at the airport by Lucy Reyes and Ileana (Head of School) from Escuela Internacional and taken to the hostel I was to stay at for the night.
Unfortunately for me, my baggage did not arrive with me and so I was without my belongings for a day. I was reunited with my baggage at 6:30 PM last night and felt so relieved that everything came in one piece.
The past day or so, I have walked around the Plaza de la Republica (near where I am staying) and visited the monument dedicated to the Mexican Revolution as well as one of the many cathedrals that Mexico City has. I spent a few days yesterday in the midst of a rally put on by one of the presidential candidates on his last day of public campaigning. The presidential election is on July 2 and the people in Mexico are very vocal and passionate about who they support. It is an exciting time here in the city.
Today, I am scheduled to meet some of the students and faculty who will work with me and my 8th grade classes at Moses Brown on Challenge 20/20 in the fall of 2006. I have brought a copy of J.F. Rischards book High Noon 20 Global Problems / 20 Years to Solve Them as well as copies of the Cupola and the 2005 NAIS Challenge 20/20 brochure. I will spend time discussing the project, showing them the presentation from last year and setting them up with this blog that I created for both of our schools to use.
